Backpackers Travel Directory - Africa
The Africa Backpackers Travel Directory aims to provide you with the best of Africa for the independent traveller on a budget.
Backpacking is a fun and unique way of travelling around the country and provides endless opportunities to meet new people and discover new places. Lodges are privately owned and many are run by the owners. Often you will find that they are travellers themselves and use their experiences to make sure that all their visitor’s needs are met. Travellers can flit between backpacker lodgings which are found in every major tourist destination. Backpacker accommodation can be found anywhere from the beach to the mountains and forests, there is a wide variety of choice in Africa.
General Information
Most Backpackers will have an information centre with leaflets, maps and other information on the town and surrounding areas. This will also include activities and restaurants/takeaways.
Braai’ing (BBQ’ing) is very popular with Backpackers, with almost every one having an outside area for their visitors. Some Backpackers have a restaurant on-site, although in larger cities that is usually not offered, as there are restaurants and takeaways within walking distance.
Backpacker Accommodation
Every Backpackers has a different atmosphere, although they all offer a complete relaxing and laid-back attitude. If you know what to expect for the money you pay, you will not be disappointed with what you get. This Travel Directory will help you make the choice that is best suited to your needs.
Travellers can expect comfortable shared or private rooms, communal kitchens, bathrooms and social areas. Backpackers offer a selection of sleeping arrangements ranging from dormitory-like rooms, double, twin and single rooms, right through to en-suite double rooms. It just depends where you are and the price you willing to pay. Most Backpackers provide bedding and kitchen amenities.
Some Backpackers offer camping facilities, but you would have to bring your own tent, sleeping bags, etc. It is unlikely that the sites would have power points, but all the facilities inside the establishments are open to campers.
Every establishment, town, city and country are different. As with everything, it is always better to do your research, especially when venturing into a country you have never been to before. Once at the Backpackers however, the owners would be more than willing to help their visitors and provides a safe base for travellers.
