Mozambique, an Undiscovered Gem

Despite Mozambique being a neighbour of South Africa and possessing fantastic natural tourism assets such as clean and beautiful beaches, fantastic weather and friendly people, the country continues to have the lowest tourism numbers of all its neighbours with the exception of Malawi. It is difficult to understand why this is the case after I visited the country.

Unfortunately, the effects of a long-lasting and bloody civil conflict take years before they can be removed, and whilst Mozambique has now officially been at peace since 1992, confidence in tourism being a viable and prosperous business sector has taken time to grow. Nevertheless, as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, there is real hope that tourism that can reverse the fortunes of citizens in Mozambique and encourage more tourists to visit this great place.

By the end of the 1990s, tourism was the fastest growing sector in Mozambique's economy and this trend shows no sign of abating. Foreign investment is most likely to occur in industries relating to tourism and whilst it will be healthy for Mozambique to develop other areas of economic interest, it should certainly be seen as a positive development for the country that widespread confidence is emerging that the nation can deliver positive travel experiences for thousands of visitors each year.

Still, many improvements still need to be made to the travel infrastructure of the country. Flying to Mozambique is expensive in comparison to other African countries such as South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. Visa restrictions in Mozambique also make it slightly trickier for European travellers to gain access to the country; which also explains the high amount of the tourists there being from South Africa, as they do not require a visa to enter - most European citizens do, however.

The upshot is that should you make a trip to Mozambique now! You will be rewarded with unspoilt beaches, amazing weather and an exciting, bustling capital city in Maputo.

Travel guides are very helpful when researching your trip and it is important to make sure that you have factored in any medication you may need to take when you travel, as many medications are hard to come by, you should also check if you require any vaccinations before travelling.

Whilst accommodation is still not as varied as it is in South Africa, there is an increasing range of options to suit travellers of all budgets and tastes, I stayed at the most idyllic lodges in Bilene for a fraction of the cost of a similar style venue in South Africa. Still, I would advise that you go now before the rest of the world cotton on to what a great nation Mozambique is to visit. Then you can boast to friends that you were there first!

Marius has travelled extensively throughout the world, one of his favourite places is Mozambique. He has stayed with a variety of Mozambique accommodation providers.
