Be inspired, enlightened, educated and enthused by this memorable and respectful opportunity to meet and learn more about some of the Jabulani herd elephants and their passionate carers.
The primary goal of the encounter is to raise awareness about elephant preservation through up-close education, so that visitors might learn how to treat elephants with care, respect, and compassion. Visitors may observe the herd up close, learning more about their behaviour, character quirks, fascinating history, and what it takes to care for them.
Beyond being a life-changing experience, visitors also contribute financially to the survival of the herd to ensure the sustainability and well-being of the elephants with all proceeds going towards HERD.
Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) provides a safe place for the herd to thrive in a semi-wild environment.
The experience takes place while the elephants are in their natural environment, with great photographic opportunities.
Open daily from 06:25–08:00.
Please arrive at the Kapama Main Gate (on the R40 between Hoedspruit and Klaserie) by 06:00am. Pre-booking is essential for entry through the security gate. Follow the Elephant Sanctuary road signs to the elephant experience.
Arrive at sunrise to meet a few members of an extraordinary family, the Jabulani Herd. Delve deeper into the biology and physiology of these gentle giants while learning about each elephant’s unique personality and remarkable story.
The 90-minute experience takes place at the Jabulani elephant stables, which borders the HERD elephant orphanage. To keep their stress levels to a minimum, the orphanage does not allow the public to visit their premises or to view the orphans.
The Jabulani Herd elephants that you will meet represent the rest of the herd, which they join a little later to continue foraging during their days in the Kapama Private Reserve. There will be between two to three elephant bulls who remain behind a low partition, creating a respectful distance between the elephants and the visitors.
Visitors will have an opportunity to provide some elephant snacks to each elephant, as well as a chance to take a snapshot memory of the memorable experience with the guidance of the carers.
Complimentary coffee and tea with biscuits will be provided upon arrival and available to enjoy until the end of the experience.
Following your Elephant Moments experience, you will have the opportunity to purchase a souvenir in our gift shop, or foster an elephant, with proceeds going towards the HERD Trust.
